Panel error messages and what they mean

A reference table of the panel's technical codes and English-only messages, with what each one means and how to fix it.

On this page

Some errors in the app.blackbox.md panel are never translated: they appear as a technical code (for example reset_failed) or as a fixed English phrase (for example “Rate limit exceeded — …”). The tables below explain what they mean and what to do. Most of them appear on the server card on the “My Servers” page (app.blackbox.md/my-servers, sidebar → “My Servers”) or in the windows you open from the card.

Available to: any customer signed in to the app.blackbox.md panel.

The blackbox.md website is available in Romanian and Russian; this article quotes the Romanian labels with their English meaning.

To find a message on this page, press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac). For messages that the panel shows as a full sentence in your language, the tables also give the technical code in parentheses, so you can quote it to support.

Root password and credentials

Message or code Where it appears What it means What to do
reset_failed after “Reset password” The panel could not change the password, usually because it could not connect to the server over SSH: the server is stopped, is still starting up, or does not accept the management key. The old password still works. If you stopped the server, click “Start”, wait a minute and try again. If the error comes back, see Resetting the root password.
reset_persist_failed, reset_partial_failure_check_redis after “Reset password” The reset did not finish correctly. Write to support immediately (see the note below).
“No credentials stored for this server” after “Reveal credentials” The panel has no saved credentials for this server. Write to us.
“Failed to decrypt credentials — encryption key may have changed” after “Reveal credentials” The saved credentials cannot be read. Write to us.

Important If you get reset_persist_failed or reset_partial_failure_check_redis, write to support immediately, at support@blackbox.md or through a support ticket from “Contul meu” (My account) → “Ajutor și suport” (Help and support). Include the order number (the “Order” field on the card), the IP address and the code shown, but no passwords. In the meantime, you can connect with an SSH key installed on the server, if you have one.

Reboot, stop and start

Message or code Where it appears What it means What to do
power_action_failed after “Reboot”, “Stop” or “Start” The command was not carried out. Often the server was already in the requested state, for example you clicked “Start” on a server that is running: the panel does not show whether the server is on or off. Check whether the server responds (over SSH or through your website). If it doesn't, wait a minute and try again; if the error comes back, write to us.
no_instance_id after “Stop” or “Start” This server cannot be stopped or started from the panel, only rebooted. This happens with some servers managed by the BLACKBOX team. Use “Reboot”. To stop or start the server, write to us.
invalid_action after “Reboot”, “Stop” or “Start” The command that was sent was not recognized. Reload the page (F5) and try again. If it happens again, write to us.

Details: Rebooting, stopping and starting a server.

SSH keys and password login

The first three rows appear as a code in English; the other messages appear as full sentences in the panel's language.

Message or code Where it appears What it means What to do
invalid_public_key after “Add key”, with “Paste a new key” The pasted text is not an accepted public key: it has more than one line, it is a private key, its type is not supported, or it is an RSA key shorter than 2048 bits. The key was not added. Paste a single line from the .pub file, for example id_ed25519.pub. See Generating an SSH key (Windows, macOS, Linux).
not_found after “Add key”, with “Use a saved key” The key you chose is no longer among the keys saved in your blackbox.md account. Reload the page and choose another key, or use “Paste a new key”.
ssh_key_push_failed, ssh_key_list_failed after “Add key” or in the “Installed keys” list The panel could not connect to the server over SSH: the server is stopped, is still starting up, or does not accept the management key. Nothing changed on the server. If you stopped the server, click “Start”, wait a minute and try again. If it happens again, read BLACKBOX keys on your server and write to us.
“No installed key found — add a key before disabling password login.” (no_customer_key_installed) after “Disable password login” The server has no key other than “Management key (blackbox.md)”. Password login stayed enabled. Add your own key with “Add SSH key”, check that you can connect with it, then try again.
“This is the last key on a key-only server — removing it would lock you out.” (last_key_on_key_only_server) after “Remove”, in the “Installed keys” list The server accepts only keys (“Key-only”), and without this key you could no longer connect. The key was not removed. First add another key or click “Enable password login”, then remove the key.
“This is blackbox.md's own management key and can't be removed.” (management_key_protected) after “Remove” The management key is used by the panel's buttons and is protected. Nothing: the key stays on the server. See BLACKBOX keys on your server.
“We couldn't verify our management key — this action is unavailable right now.” (management_key_unknown) after “Disable password login”, “Enable password login” or “Remove” The panel cannot confirm the server's management key, so it refuses the change to avoid locking you out. Nothing changed. Write to us, with the order number and the IP address.
“This key is managed by BlackBox and can't be removed.” (key_managed) after “Remove”, on a company server managed by the BLACKBOX team The key was installed by the BLACKBOX team. On these servers you can remove only the keys you added yourself or that are saved in your account. If the key needs to be removed, write to us.
“Another key change is already running for this server — try again in a moment.” (operation_in_progress) after “Remove” A change to the keys or to password login is already running on the same server, for example from another tab. Wait a minute and try again.
“Failed to change password login.” after “Disable password login” or “Enable password login” The change was not made: another change was in progress, the limit was exceeded, or the server did not respond. The previous setting stayed in place. Wait a minute and try again. If it happens again, write to us.

Details: Adding and removing SSH keys on the server and Enabling and disabling SSH password login.

Server upgrade

Message or code Where it appears What it means What to do
“Upgrade isn't available right now (…).” the “Upgrade server” window The parentheses contain a technical code in English. See the explanation below the table.
“No larger configuration is available for this server right now.” the “Upgrade server” window The server is already on the largest plan in its family. From the panel, you can upgrade only within the same family. For a plan from another family, write to us.
“This server's plan can't be upgraded this way — contact support.” (not_upgradeable_plan) the “Upgrade server” window The server's plan, for example a “VPS hosting” plan, cannot be increased from the panel. Write to us.
“Your wallet balance isn't enough to cover this upgrade.” (insufficient_balance) the “Upgrade server” window, with the “Top up your balance →” link The upgrade is paid only from your balance, and your balance does not cover the amount next to “Charged now (prorated)”. Nothing was charged. Top up your balance (Topping up your balance), then open the window again.
“An upgrade is already in progress for this server.” (job_active) after “Upgrade server” An upgrade started earlier is still running. Don't start another one. Wait for the confirmation email, or check “Spec” on the card in a few minutes.
“Upgrade failed”, “Upgrade reverted” on the server card The upgrade was not carried out. If an amount was taken from your balance, it is returned automatically. You can try again. If it happens again, write to us.
“Upgrade stalled — contact support” on the server card The upgrade has not moved forward for more than 15 minutes. Write to us, with the order number.

The code in parentheses. In “Upgrade isn't available right now (…).”, the code shows the technical reason; you don't need to interpret it. The same code may also appear on its own, in the same window, above the buttons, after you click “Upgrade server”. It usually means one of the following:

  • the server is not currently in a state that allows an upgrade, for example it is just starting, rebooting or has another operation in progress: wait a few minutes and open the window again;
  • there is no larger plan that can be offered, or the server's data could not be read: write to us;
  • the infrastructure service is temporarily unavailable: try again later.

If the message doesn't go away, send us its exact text. Details: Server upgrade: moving to a larger plan.

Permanent deletion

Message or code Where it appears What it means What to do
“That doesn't match. Type "…" exactly to confirm.” (confirm_mismatch) after “Schedule termination”, in the “Terminate server” window The text you entered does not match the required name. The window accepts the server's original name, not the name you gave it with “Rename”. Copy the name exactly from the “Type … to confirm” line and paste it into the field.
“A termination is already scheduled for this server.” after “Schedule termination” The deletion has already been scheduled, for example from another tab. Open the window again: you'll see the date it will run and the “Cancel termination” button.

Details: Permanently deleting a server.

Backups, monitoring and alerts

Message or code Where it appears What it means What to do
backup_extra_disabled after the “Backups” button on the server card The automatic backup service is not available. The server and its data are not affected. Make your own backups (see the note below).
panel_monitoring_disabled the “Monitoring” page The “Monitoring” page is temporarily unavailable. Your servers are not affected. Come back later. If the message doesn't go away, write to us.
rate_limited the “Monitoring” page The page's data was requested too many times within one minute, through “Refresh” or by changing the server or the time range under “Trends”. Wait a minute, then click “Refresh” once.
alerts_ingest_disabled after “Save” under “Notification preferences”, on the “Alerts” card Alerts are temporarily unavailable, and your preferences were not saved. Come back later and save again.

Note BLACKBOX does not currently make automatic backups of your server. Keep your own copies outside the server: Backup strategy for your server.

“Rate limit exceeded — …” messages

A message of the form “Rate limit exceeded — … limited to N requests per M seconds” (or “… per M minutes”) means you repeated the same action too many times in a short time: N is the number of requests allowed, and M is the length of the time window. For example:

  • “Rate limit exceeded — power actions are limited to 6 requests per 60 seconds”: at most 6 “Reboot”, “Stop” or “Start” commands per minute, for all your servers combined;
  • “Rate limit exceeded — resize is limited to 3 requests per 600 seconds”: at most 3 upgrade requests in 10 minutes.

What to do:

  1. Stop clicking the button: attempts made while you are blocked also count and make the wait longer.
  2. Wait for the whole time window given in the message (600 seconds is 10 minutes).
  3. Try once.

All limits: The “Too many attempts” message and usage limits.

Pages that are not for customers

If you open a saved link or type a panel address yourself, you may land on a page meant for the BLACKBOX team. This is not a problem with your account.

What you see What to do
“403 — Access denied”, with the text “You don't have permission to access this page.” and the “Go to dashboard” button Click “Go to dashboard”, then “My Servers” in the sidebar.
A “… is coming soon” page, with the “Back to Overview” button Click the button, then “My Servers” in the sidebar.
The panel takes you to “Overview” without any message Open “My Servers” from the sidebar.

The line “If you believe this is an error, contact a Superadmin.” on the “403 — Access denied” page is addressed to the BLACKBOX team; for you, the page only means that the address is not meant for customers.

If “Overview” shows “No servers found. Contact an administrator to get access.”, this is normal: your servers are under “My Servers”. See The panel shows “No servers found”.

“Unauthorized” or “Failed to load…” after a long break

If the panel has stayed open for a long time, your next action may show the message “Unauthorized” or a message that begins with “Failed to load…” (for example “Failed to load server data. Please try again later.” on the “Overview” page). Usually this means your session has expired: a panel session lasts 8 hours from sign-in.

  1. Reload the page (F5).
  2. If the panel's sign-in page appears, sign in again from blackbox.md: “Contul meu” (My account) → “Deschide panoul” (Open the panel). See Opening the app.blackbox.md panel from your account.
  3. Open “My Servers” and repeat the action.

If the message appears right after a fresh sign-in, the session is not the cause: send us the exact text.

The message “Not found”, after you click a button on the card, means the server is no longer available in your account, for example because its deletion has been carried out in the meantime. Reload the page.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some messages stay in English or appear as codes, whatever language the panel is set to? Some errors are passed on directly by the system, without translation, and the language you choose in the panel does not change them. Use the tables above.

Did anything change on the server after the error? With reset_failed, invalid_public_key, ssh_key_push_failed and the “Rate limit exceeded — …” messages, nothing changed. With reset_persist_failed and reset_partial_failure_check_redis, write to support immediately.

What should I send to support? The exact text of the message or a screenshot, the button you clicked, the approximate time, the order number BBX-… from the “Order” field, and the IP address. Don't send passwords or private keys. Copy the message before you reload the page, because it disappears afterward. Contacts: How to contact BLACKBOX support.

Does the AI assistant get the same messages? Errors from the MCP tools are explained separately, in MCP limits and error codes.
