The “Adresa ta IP publică” (Your public IP address) page (blackbox.md/ip or ip.blackbox.md; in Russian, blackbox.md/ru/ip or ip.blackbox.md/ru) shows the public IP address of the device you are browsing from, that is, the address that the servers and websites you connect to see. The page has no link in the website menu: open the address directly. You can get the same data from the command line.

Available to: anyone, without an account and without signing in.

The blackbox.md website is available in Romanian and Russian; this article quotes the Romanian labels with their English meaning.

Important The tool shows the address of your device (computer, phone, home or office network), not the address of your server. You'll find the server's address in the app.blackbox.md panel, under “Infrastructure” → “My Servers”, in the “IP” field on the server card: The “My Servers” page: the server card.

How to find your address in a browser

  1. Open https://ip.blackbox.md or https://blackbox.md/ip. Your address appears right away, in large characters, under the heading “Adresa ta IP publică” (Your public IP address).
  2. Click the “Copiază” (Copy) button under the address. For 2 seconds the button shows “Copiat!” (Copied!), and the address is on your clipboard.
  3. Paste the address where you need it: in a firewall rule, in the fail2ban configuration or in a support ticket.

If “Copiat!” doesn't appear, your browser blocked access to the clipboard. Click the address: it gets selected in full. Then copy it with Ctrl+C (on macOS, Cmd+C).

Under the address, the page shows three more fields:

Field What it shows
“Familie protocol” (Protocol family) IPv4 or IPv6: the type of address you used to connect to the page.
“DNS invers” (Reverse DNS) The name linked to the address in DNS (the PTR record), usually set by your internet provider. “—” appears if the address has no such name or if the answer takes longer than half a second.
“User-Agent” The text your browser uses to introduce itself to websites: the browser, its version and the operating system. Long text is shortened: hold the pointer over it to see it in full. “—” appears if the browser didn't send it.

The result is not cached: each time you reload the page, you see your current address.

How to find your address from the command line

The address https://ip.blackbox.md/api/ip returns the same data in JSON format. This is useful on a computer without a graphical interface or in a script.

Linux and macOS

curl https://ip.blackbox.md/api/ip

Just the address, if you have jq installed:

curl -s https://ip.blackbox.md/api/ip | jq -r .ip

Windows (PowerShell)

Windows 10 and 11 include curl.exe:

curl.exe https://ip.blackbox.md/api/ip

Just the address:

(Invoke-RestMethod https://ip.blackbox.md/api/ip).ip

Sample response (the address is fictitious):

{"ip":"203.0.113.25","family":"IPv4","reverseDns":null,"userAgent":"curl/8.5.0"}
JSON field What it contains
ip The public IP address.
family IPv4 or IPv6.
reverseDns The reverse DNS name, or null in the same cases in which the page shows “—”.
userAgent The program that sent the request, for example curl/ followed by its version, or null if the program didn't identify itself.

The ip.blackbox.md subdomain is dedicated to this tool: the other links on the page, for example those in the menu, take you to blackbox.md.

What you can use your IP address for

Situation What you do with the address Details
You want to allow access to a service on your server only from your address. Add it to a ufw (Ubuntu, Debian) or firewalld (AlmaLinux, CentOS Stream) rule on the server. Firewall: network filtering and ufw/firewalld on the server
You don't want fail2ban to block you. Add it to ignoreip, so that your failed login attempts don't get your address blocked. Protection against password-guessing attempts with fail2ban
You connect to a database from your computer. Use it in the database user's privileges (MariaDB/MySQL) or in pg_hba.conf (PostgreSQL), and in the firewall rule for the database port. Databases: MariaDB/MySQL and PostgreSQL
You can't connect to your server. Send it to support, so the team can check whether the address is blocked. I can't connect over SSH

Example for fail2ban, in the file /etc/fail2ban/jail.local. If the file already has a [DEFAULT] section, don't add a second one: add the ignoreip line to the existing section. If the ignoreip line already exists, add your address at the end of it, separated by a space.

[DEFAULT]
ignoreip = 127.0.0.1/8 ::1 YOUR_IP

Check the configuration. The correct response is “OK: configuration test is successful”.

fail2ban-client -t

Then restart fail2ban:

systemctl restart fail2ban

Traffic to your server also passes through a network-level filter managed by BLACKBOX. If the database port (or another port) doesn't respond from outside, write to us and tell us the port and your IP address.

When you write to support about a block, copy your address with “Copiază” (Copy) and include it in the ticket, together with the server's IP address and the time the problem appeared: Opening a support ticket.

Warning Many home and mobile connections get a dynamic IP address, which changes when you reconnect. If you allow SSH only from today's address and that address changes, you lose access to your server, and there is no web console for customers. Before you change the firewall, keep a second SSH session open. If you have lost access, write to us.

Privacy

In the “Fără urmărire” (No tracking) block, the page states: “Nu stocăm adresa ta IP, nu transmitem date către terți și nu instalăm cookie-uri publicitare.” (We don't store your IP address, we don't pass data on to third parties and we don't install advertising cookies.) The tool doesn't require an account or any personal data: it only shows you your address and doesn't save it to your account. As with any page on the website, the request appears in the technical access logs (IP address, browser, time of access), which are kept for the periods set out in Privacy policy in brief.

Messages and unusual values

What you see What it means What to do
“Nu am putut detecta adresa ta IP.” (We couldn't detect your IP address.) The service that determines the address didn't respond. Reload the page or use the curl command above. If the message keeps appearing, write to us.
unknown instead of the address The address could not be determined. Reload the page. If it happens again, write to us.
“—” next to “DNS invers” (Reverse DNS) The address has no reverse DNS name, or the answer was late. Nothing: this is not an error.
“Copiat!” (Copied!) doesn't appear Your browser blocked access to the clipboard. Click the address and copy it manually.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the address here different from the one in my computer's settings (for example, 192.168.1.10)? Your computer has a private address on the local network. The router goes out to the internet with a single public address for all the devices on the network (NAT), and the page shows that address. Servers see the public address.

I use a VPN or a proxy. Which address do I see? The address of the VPN or proxy, not the address of your internet connection. Usually, your server also sees that same address while the VPN is on. If you turn it off, check again.

Why do I see IPv4 even though my network also has IPv6? The page shows the address your browser actually used to connect to it. When you connect to your server using the IPv4 address from the panel, the server also sees your IPv4 address.

My address has changed. What do I do? Reload the page to see the new address, and update the firewall rules and ignoreip on the server. If you need a fixed address, ask your internet provider for a static IP.

Can I find my server's address with this tool? Not from your browser: the page shows your device's address. The server's address is in the panel, on the server's card in “My Servers”. If you run the curl command above on the server itself, it shows the address the server uses to reach the internet.
